Gwen Botka has always wanted to be a teacher. She is an alumni of Biola University, receiving her Liberal Studies degree and Credential in May of 1988. Gwen was hired while Student Teaching and began her first teaching assignment in first grade at Mulberry Elementary School, EWCSD, in the Fall of 1988. Gwen taught for 6 years in Grades 1-3 and was named “Teacher of the Year”. She served on the School Site Council as a Teacher representative, was a District Mentor for new teachers throughout the District, providing training workshops, and worked as a an Accreditation team member. She then shifted from “full-time” teaching to motherhood.
While at home, Gwen continued to invest in Education as a free-lance writer for Creative Teaching Press. She authored several books that teachers still have in their classrooms today! In 1999, Gwen returned to Biola as a Student Teaching Supervisor. She then began teaching the Student Teaching Seminar class, training supervisors and coordinating all placements for students. She has since transitioned into other courses. Gwen has taught Children’s Literature as well as Secondary reading. She serves on the Teacher Preparation Committee with her colleagues.
Gwen is currently teaching Introduction to Teaching, Elementary Curriculum and First Year Seminar for incoming students. She loves being at Biola and having the opportunity to serve the students, equip them for their future as Christian educators, and mentor them through their journey here at Biola. Her desire is to see Biola educators making a life-long impact in Education and the lives of students, teaching both with a Christian heart and a Christian mind.
